The theft of fish from Western Saharan waters should be damned by the European commission, not encouragedThere is one surefire way of allowing the internet to damage your sanity: spend too much time reading politicians' blogs. Take a recent post from Maria Damanaki, whose career has taken her from agitating against the Greek dictatorship in the 1970s to being the European commissioner for fisheries today. "Blue should become green," she declared in her blog on EU efforts to lessen the ecological destruction wrought by illegal fishing. Those efforts might have some credibility if the Brussels bureaucracy was not actively encouraging European vessels to act unlawfully in the waters off Western Sahara. In 2005, the EU and Morocco signed a lucrative fisheries agreement.

Today, as the UN publishes a report on Western Sahara for consideration by the security council, over 100 parliamentarians, celebrities and NGOs have added their names to a letter to UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon. The letter calls on the UN to monitor human rights in Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. Minurso, the UN mission for Western Sahara, has the dubious distinction of being the only contemporary peace-keeping mission without a mandate to monitor human rights. Human rights defenders in the disputed territory are regular victims of arbitrary arrest, sexual violence, torture and "disappearance". The renewal of Minurso's mandate on the 30 April provides the opportunity the security council must use to rectify this.

As the world's diplomats duel over her destiny, Aminatou Haidar, on the 29th day of her hunger strike, could be hours from deathAnyone who has seen Hunger, Steve McQueen's harrowing film about the Maze prison hunger strike, will have some idea of just how horrific it is to die by starvation. Bobby Sands, a fit 27-year-old man, survived 66 days without food. Aminatou Haidar, a delicate 42-year-old, is on the 29th day of her hunger strike; with a perforated ulcer and a constitution weakened by years of imprisonment and torture, there are fears that she will not survive much longer. She is now too weak to stand, and the director of Lanzarote hospital, Domingo de Guzmán, has warned that Haidar's life expectancy is now "hours or days rather than weeks".

Yesterday a cross-party group of MPs tabled a motion expressing dismay at her expulsion from Western Sahara. Her deportation has been condemned by Amnesty and Human Rights Watch, as well as supporters around the world. Last week the US state department called for "a speedy determination of her legal status and full respect for due process and human rights". Although barely able to speak, Haidar has vowed to continue her hunger strike as part of the struggle of the entire Saharawi people. "It is about the collective right denied to the Saharawi people to live freely in their native land," she said.

Timothy Garton Ash covers a broad canvas of post-1989 issues (Comment, 5 November), but the key failure was to leave Mikhail Gorbachev without economic support at the crucial moment. In 1989, unlike in 1945, the west lacked a George Marshall with a plan to pay for transition and stability in Europe. The Soviet Union imploded dramatically, rather than by stages, the Russian people found themselves at the mercy of the oligarchs and the mafia, and soon came to blame Gorbachev for all their ills. As George Soros agrees, the rouble should have been underpinned and guaranteed, not just to prevent severe hardship for former Soviet citizens but also to ensure the early erosion of east-west barriers.
